PROJECT description:

A majority of the hillside residential design practice of Arshia Architects focuses on a balance of performance and presage as a whole. Without compromising its living functions, AL99 looked into a design approach to fuse complex utilities and tectonics together and treat it as one uniform apparatus.

With this holistic approach, AL99 aimed to develop the required performance together with the form instead of separating the body of the architecture and its skin. The residential programs were laid out on the steep hillside topography of the site, approaching from the road to ground floor garage, and leading down to living areas and bedrooms, with stunning views for each floor. Both living areas and bedrooms had their own decks overlooking the valley. The outdoor common space was developed with an elevated pool and seating pit in order to expand the minimal living area outdoors and take advantage of the deck with an indoor-outdoor connectivity.

To block the view from the nearby road, the approach of exterior design was to develop a unified building enclosure. A firm material-neutral ring streamlined the exterior building elements including walls, railings, solar panels to act not only as a barrier between public and private but also framing the scenery view downhill like an aperture. A cognitive material palette was introduced to re-define the exterior geometry and delivers a visually floating image of the structure.
