PROJECT description:

The single-family dwelling consists of a narrative to extract voids from a solid that is what remains of the consummation of the buildable envelope. The act of removing, became an operative from the formation of the body of the house. The home as an element of discovery infused with subtleties of nature, offered the primitive for the design. The house consists of two components, the crux and an expanded plinth which served as a base for separating the figure from the ground. This plinth embodies the subterranean garage and a lounge/guesthouse within a subdued geometry that allows for the main figure on top to evolve. The procedure for the design of the main body utilizes the intersection of pill-shaped meteors that are aligned to the direction of the ocean view as Boolean operatives to define apertures towards this view.

The openings and volume blend in one strategy. In order to mitigate the traditional dichotomy of aperture and shell. The space is one, with its openings, interior cavities and functions. The project aims for simplicity in its use of material, structure and functions. Uses are ‘found’ rather than determined, as the utility of the project borders on convergence with nature. Natural lighting and ventilation are essential in the design as is the use of mass in the constructions of the walls to delay heat transmission to an optimal 8-hour period.

The project also utilizes solar technology to mitigate the use of electricity in conjunction with a rooftop deck that allows for the inclusion of expansive views of the pacific palisades and the ocean.
