PROJECT description:

The Arts District of Los Angeles uniquely showcases the duality of the city’s port and rail past with the burgeoning cultural, artistic, and retail future. SI60 harmonizes these two temporal paths by offering a dialogue on methods that enable the city to embrace the future but remember its past. The scale of the existing structure allows for the space to serve many purposes highlighted by the revamped retail ground floor which serves to drive pedestrian traffic and connect the growing network of live workspaces in the Arts District.

The former industrial space is set to become a five-story multifamily expanse that is aided by the addition of a rooftop assembly that offers a wide range of amenities to the site and allows for tenants to enjoy dramatic views back onto downtown Los Angeles and the majestic hills of the Eastside. The distinct wrap around the form that encases the nearly 200 parking spaces on the edge of the property also aims to enhance the public’s visual interpretation of the structure and in conjunction with the rooftop assembly drives the modernistic and minimalistic ethos of the design.

SI40

We entrusted an important asset in the design of land and marine vessels, that could benefit architecture at this scale when replicated to a larger envelope. The spaces became fluid and directional to circulation, same as they would in response to a liquid or gaseous flow.
